The Foundation for CSR & Children’s Rights (“CSR Children”) has confirmed that their Keynote Speaker for this year’s CEO Forum on Children’s Rights & Business Principles will be the Vice– President & Secretary General of the African Development Bank (AfDB), CECILIA AKINTOMIDE.
Speaking to Toyin Olakanpo, CEO of the Foundation, she said that Ms Akintomide was their first choice given the African Development Bank’s 4 year Gender Strategy launched this year which focuses on Investing in Gender Equality for Africa’ s Transformation;. “ The focus of the AfDB Gender Strategy is aligned with the Forum’s theme this year on the “Girl Dividend: – Why Should CEOs Care,” she said.
The topic of investing in gender equality and the rights of the girl child reached the nation’s consciousness with the horrific abduction of over 200 girls from a boarding school in Chibok in April earlier this year. The Foundation for CSR & Children’s Rights works to engage the private sector to support Children’s Rights through their CSR Targets with clear strategy that reflects the UN Children’s Rights & Business Principles. Ms Olakanpo went on to say that it is of critical importance that the private sector adopts strategic CSR policies that will uplift the rights of girls in Nigeria and in African generally as opposed to donating large amounts of money to international NGOs. She said that though much has been done for the advancement of women, we must not forget that a woman is a girl first, before she becomes a woman; and for this reason we must protect and nourish the girl child and ensuring that they receive an education.
The 2nd Annual CEO Forum takes place on October 8, 2014 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos. Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN, Executive Governor of Lagos State was the Keynote Speaker at the Foundation’s inaugural event last year.
